I Walk to the Beat of My Own Drum

My name is Kye Hawkins and I am 11. I started modeling when I was 5. My first job came from my very first casting. It was for a TVC for insurance. Then I did a photo shoot for David Jones Christmas Catalogue. It was a big deal as the shoot was with the famous Aussie model Megan Gale. Soon after this I did an editorial shoot for Studio Bambini magazine. I was very lucky with my first jobs.

Since then I did a lot of photo shoots for Peter Alexander (The Sleepwear King). These were my favourite as Peter was awesome. He thought I was a funny kid. Once when I arrived on a shoot he said, “Here he is, the little star,” it felt good. I also loved work- ing with the photographer for these shoots, Georges Antoni, he was really nice too and we had a lot of fun.

Ihave also been very lucky to work with a famous Aussie designer Camilla. When you tell people you did a Camilla shoot they literally gasp, it’s cool. I did her Lookbook and this shoot was amazing. Her kaftans are so colourful and the shoot was really “hippy cool.” I also did Australian Fashion Week for her. Again another amazing experience as her shows are always different. This one was in a massive teepee and we had a Llama with us.

Ihave been lucky with my work which has included everything. Editorial, catalogue, look books, brand work, TV commercials, fashion parades etc.

Outside of modelling I love all things electronic, I spend hours on my X-box and my computer. I must also con- fess I am one of the many Pokémon addicts walking the streets with my phone.

The beach is something I love, we are moving closer to the beach this year and I can’t wait as I have just started learning to surf. My Dad is teaching me.

I also love guitar and hope to have a band one day soon. I like all kinds of music from Hilltop Hoods and Illy to music influenced by my mum like Violent Soho, who I am seeing in con- cert in October, and Faith No More, Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses and Blink 182.

ILOVE being on stage, I never feel nervous, I feel at home. I do everything from public speaking to Eisteddfods. This year I entered four poetry reciting events and won first place in three of them. I do singing lessons and Hip Hop dance lessons. Then perform in yearly concerts. This October I will be on stage at the Syd- ney Opera House. I am doing 5 short drama pieces with 3 other talented kids and we are also being the MC’s for the event, it’s a schools spectacular event. I can’t wait!

If you want to work in the modelling/fashion/acting business you need personality and confidence. I talk a lot and I move a lot and providing I know when to turn it on and when to turn it off it works in my favour. Some tell me I have “X Factor,” my understanding of that is, I walk to the beat of my own drum and don’t feel I need to be like everyone else. You put me in front of a camera and tell me to dance, I will do it.

I live in the moment and don’t worry about what others are thinking. That’s how you need to be for this work. You also need to be happy and accepting of winning and loosing. You will go to many castings, even call backs and not score the job. You must remember not to take it personally. Plus, sometimes I get a lot of consistent work, but then it can turn around a dry up for a while. If you enjoy it, you just have to hang in there.
