Phoenix Boys was established in June 2019 by dancer and choreographer, Simon Hundley.
The company was born out of a need for more opportunities for boys who are passionate about dancing to get together in the United Kingdom.
Phoenix Boys started with just 14 boys at the first-ever workshop and in just 7 months now has over 200 boys registered throughout England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The company offers workshops, intensives, performance opportunities and most recently an associate programme. This supplementary training has proved to be a real hit with lots of boys, who are able to dance and train at their own studios but come together once a month and experience classes in an all-male environment with others just like them. The programme is currently running in two locations in the UK, hosts workshops all over the country and there are plans to open more associate branches in the coming months.
The boys take class in classical ballet, jazz, contemporary, commercial and conditioning.
Simon says: “I have always been incredibly passionate about boys dancing and making sure they stay dancing! We all are all aware of the many factors that discourage some boys from continuing with what they love, but our programme seems to have really helped a lot of young male dancers to realise that there are many others just like them and that they have a fantastic network of people around them”.
Phoenix Boys is passionate about being available to all male dancers and insists that there should not be an audition to take part.
“We have boys who are complete beginners right through to boys in full-time vocational ballet training and everyone takes something from it which is super special. The growth of the company, both in attendees and supporters has just been incredible and we are all absolutely loving sharing this journey together and putting the UK on the male dance map! We would also love to visit other countries and share a little bit of what we do, especially the USA so look out for that!”
